John Talbot Clifton's yacht, Ma'oona, 1908
YACHTING AT COWES.
ACCIDENT TO SQUIRE CLIFTON’S VESSEL.
At Cowes regatta last week Mr. J. T, Clifton's Ma'oona was conspicuous, an
accident preventing her winning the 15-metre class race. This was sailed under double reefed
mainsails, and with storm jibs and foresails, no top sails being set. Ma'oona was setting a
little jibtopsail on the run from Cowes to Ryde, when the cleet holding the preventer backstay
pulled out of the deck and let the stick go to splinters.
In the thirty-seven races sailed by the class this is the only breakage that has
occurred to any vessel of 15-metres. Starting at 10-15 a.m. the Ma’oona arrived at four seconds
past one, coming second to Shimna, which arrived at 12h. 57mins 20secs. The yacht carried off a
first on the Monday and a second on the Wednesday.
