Photograph of the White Cottages, Church Road, St.Annes in the early
1980s.
Church Road was originally a farm track known as Common Side Lane, a
continuation of Commonside, Ansdell. It was created when Lytham Hawes was enclosed in the 1600s, converting this large open space
into farmland and common..
These cottages would have overlooked Lytham Common which lay between Common Side
Lane and the sand dunes (now the town of St.Annes). They were probably built as labourers
cottages for a nearby farm and rebuilt in the Gothic style by the Clifton Estate c1870.
